But after a week of sea, sun, and too much food it was time to move on to Melbourne, our last stop before going home.

Our 2001 Vacation, the vacation of a lifetime (page 6)

Dunk Island
Week 6 of our vacation and the second week in Queensland we spent on one of the Great Barrier Reef islands. Dunk Island is a mid-size Island. It has one resort, an airport, and a small artist colony. The rest of the Island is empty. One of the reasons we picked this island/resort was that it has a kids club. And the boys had a really good time there. Below you can see Nathan on a fishing expedition and Stephen during a dress-up evening.
Most of the island is a rain forest preserve and that shows in the whole landscaping of the resort. As much as possible the original vegetation has been preserved. Here is a picture showing a tiny bit of the resort grounds.
On the island there is a small artist colony. Stephanie went there to have a look and buy some jewelry. She got herself some nice sea star earrings. One of the artists makes pottery and below you can see some of the items on display.
Of course an island on the Great Barrier Reef has a couple of beaches. However, some of them were impossible to reach. The resort had a nice beach in front of it, except that at low tide the water dropped enough to change the whole bay into a mud puddle.
On our last day we rented a dinghy to visit a small island close by. It had been quite wavy the days before and we did not want to take Stephanie out and get her seasick again. But this day the water was very calm.
